A Styling Tip for Every Month of 2017

January 3, 2017

2017 has finally arrived and for many of us, bidding adieu to the nuttiness that was 2016 was cause for larger celebration than usual. So as we recover from said NYE festivities, whether they involved copious amounts of champagne and taking up residency on the dance floor or maybe just a relaxing evening at home with loved ones, smudging away the weird juju that the last 365 days brought, looking forward to new resolutions, hopes and plans is basically the only way to go from here.

Naturally, we would like to contribute to those resolutions from a sartorial standpoint and so, bring you 12 styling tricks to try this year, one for every month. Whether you take daring style risks or not, a new look for a new year feels refreshing and exciting. And who knows, perhaps trying something new on the outside might inspire momentum for bigger changes overall. New year, same you…but better.

The start of a new year is the perfect opportunity to be bold in your choices. Go for bright and big, Dolce & Gabbana-inspired florals over dainty, delicate prints.

Give into the romance of the month by layering monochromatic neutral lace and silk dresses with oversized, cozy sweaters. It’s a refreshing shift from the typical red and pink Valentine’s Day clichés and are the perfect mix of effortless, sexy and comfortable.

Kick off spring time by embracing your inner prairie goth. Go for high necks, intricate laces and a dark lip to stand out in a sea of pastels and florals.

Mix prints and textures and go for shorter length jackets and skirts to embrace the brightness and warmth of spring! Try a cropped jacket lined with a bold color or pattern for an unexpected pop to your look.

RandM MUSE: Gwen Stefani wearing Alexander McQueen with an Alix of Bohemia jacket for Glamour’s Women of the Year issue.

Play with layers. Wear a sheer or fishnet bodysuit underneath a strapless, architectural jumpsuit or dress to add a bit of edge and interest to an otherwise timeless piece.

RandM MUSE: Cara Delevingne wearing Alexandre Vauthier while promoting Suicide Squad in NYC.

Fashion should never be taken too seriously and the perfect time to exercise this notion is the start of summer. Try a fun, pop-art inspired print – be it lips, fruit or any other cartoon-like graphic with wit – and pair with a tried and true favorite (like over the knee boots).

RandM MUSE: Hailee Steinfeld wearing Roberto Cavalli with Stuart Weitzman boots at the Jingle Ball in St. Paul, MN.

Summer dresses are always an easy go-to for mid summer night cocktails but do something different this year: borrow from the boys in a sexy, white silk tuxedo paired with a simple choker.

RandM MUSE: Ciara wearing Houghton NYC during the announcement of her as Revlon’s new Global Ambassador.

As wedding season begins, rather than going for the typical flowy maxi dress, try playing with symmetry and proportions. Wear a one-shoulder number or a piece with a statement bow or train. And note, this doesn’t necessarily apply to dresses only. Statement tops with wide leg trousers or pencil skirts are a great alternative.

RandM MUSE: Hailee Steinfeld wearing Reem Acra and Giuseppe Zanotti heels.

For an elegant yet out of the ordinary look, pair a bodycon dress and classic tailored coat in the same bold color. Monochromatic looks have a tendency to look high-fashion and modern, even when the shapes are timeless.

RandM MUSE: Jennifer Lopez wearing a Christian Siriano outfit with Christian Louboutin pumps.

‘Tis the season for black, black and more black. Get into the Halloween spirit by donning a modern, feminine take on goth: layer lace, dark blooms, black over the knee boots and a bold lip.

RandM MUSE: Cara Delevingne wearing Zuhair Murad while promoting Suicide Squad in NYC.

It’s about time to bust out the turtlenecks. Balance the sleekness of a simple black turtleneck with a voluminous skirt (or trousers), on Thanksgiving or otherwise. Add ankle strap heels and just like that, you’re a modern day Grace Kelly.

RandM MUSE: Ciara wearing Stephane Rolland at the 2016 American Music Awards.

Put away the cocktail dresses and try adding a metallic belt to an embellished romper as this year’s glitzy look to holiday parties.
