The Hyper Realistic Paintings of Alyssa Monks

Alyssa Monks’ hyper realistic oil paintings depicting people behind steamed and water surfaces make you uncomfortable the way the best art often times does. Monks’ art gets unapologetically close to subjects in bathtub or shower-like settings, home to one of the most naked practices of daily life, literally and figuratively, and captures them in photographic-like detail with slightly grotesque facial expression or movement.

“My intention is to transfer the intimacy and vulnerability of my human experience into a painted surface,” says Monks. “I like mine to be as intimate as possible, each brush stroke like a fossil, recording every gesture and decision.”
