It was a busy weekend for Rachel McAdams.
Friday, Rachel was honored at the Santa Barbara Film Festival with the American Riviera award for her performance in the Oscar-nominated Spotlight.
Saturday, she presented Spotlight director Tom McCarthy with a medallion for his Feature Film nomination at the DGA Awards.
Two very different looks for two very different events. Details below.
Santa Barbara Film Festival
January and February are interesting months to dress, particularly in California. Rich fabrics and opulent details make less sense after the holidays, even dead in the middle of winter, and though the weather feels like spring on the west coast, we’re still a few months away from pastels, florals and linens feeling appropriate. We wanted Rachel to look elegant yet give her a dress that would make sense for the season and occasion. We were going to Santa Barbara, after all, so it needed to feel dressed up enough for a red carpet yet effortless and easy, to reflect the spirit of the town. Enter this beautiful semi-sheer white dress with a peplum hemline from Jonathan simkhai, the perfect mix of elegant and cool. We added a pink satin overcoat from House of CB and Louboutin satin pumps for the finishing touch of fresh.

It’s no secret that little black dresses are red carpet staples. Yet getting the perfect black dress isn’t always as straightforward as it may seem. Often times, the classic numbers tend to err on the side of boring. Hitting the perfect doses of interest and sophistication tends to be a bit of a balancing act: our solution is to always look for unique shapes and unexpected details. This dress hit both of those criteria. A sexy sequined bodycon dress on top, with alluring chiffon panels on the bottom, this Michael Kors LBD, paired with Brian Atwood platforms, made Rachel shine on the red carpet. The shape was particularly stunning with movement: every step Rachel took added wow factor. The best part? This dress would still look great 10, 20 years from now.
