To quote Alexander Wang, “anyone can get dressed up and glamorous. But it is how people dress in their off days that is most intriguing.”
When your job is to embody the spirit and story of the world’s greatest designers on a runway, you can’t help but wear your own clothing with a similar charisma. Models seem to maintain a je nes sais quoi and aesthetic interest whether they’re debuting abstract couture or laying low in jeans and a tee after clocking out.
Add to this the growing fascination with street style in general and you have one sought-after sartorial recipe. While you can’t be taught said magnetism, you can at least equip yourself with some key pieces to mimic that similar effortlessness.
Here are 10 #RandM approved pieces for Model Off Duty Style.
1. BLACK OVER-THE-KNEE OR 2. CHELSEA BOOTS
The must-have footwear for MOD style. Simple and straightforward. Easy enough to run around from show to show. Practical enough to wear with literally anything.
3. CONCERT TEE
Pair with a blazer for cool yet pulled together. Or wear on its own for an I-woke-up-like-this straight forwardness. Just make sure it’s a band you really listen to.
4. RIPPED SKINNY JEANS
We love a good boyfriend jean but not everyone can pull off that level of bagginess without veering into frumpy territory. A great and more flattering alternative is the ripped skinny: easy to dress up or down.
5. OVERSIZED SCARF OR WRAP
Keeping warm (and maybe shielded from the paps) has never looked so chic. Choose fabrics wisely depending on the season to keep your wrap game strong.
6. MOTORCYCLE JACKET
Though we here at #RandM see a moto jacket as a major closet staple, it’s especially essential for chic, MOD outerwear. Throw it on any look for an automatic dose of cool.
7. VINTAGE BLOUSE
Vintage inspired pieces are a no-brainer for true MOD style. But even more so, they add a cool menswear and/or ethnic element to possibly an otherwise simple ensemble.
8. CUT OFFS
The best way to get them? Buy vintage Levi’s a size too big and take a pair of scissors + a ride in the washer and dryer to ‘em. Wear them SIMPLE with rock star inspired booties or LADYLIKE with loafers and a classic coat.
Lennon did it. Behati did it. The best way to see the world is through rock n roll shaped glasses.
10. WIDE BRIM FEDORA
Though messy hair is never really an issue for MOD style (the more laid back, the better), in the event the head situation is completely unpresentable, wide brim fedoras to the rescue! MOD favorites include Rag & Bone as well as Janessa Leone.
